He kept hearing her voice in his head. Maybe it was guilt. He was with Candy for over thirty years.
Candy was the new girl in home room, senior year. She looked so out of place, JT’s heart went out to her. Learning they had a few common interests, they talked every day. By Christmas they were a couple and married a year later.
Candy unexpectedly passed away, in her sleep five years ago. JT was devastated and did not know how to get on without his best friend.
For three years JT went through the motion of living. He tried to convince himself he was doing all right and then cry himself to sleep.
His friends convinced him to go out, one night, to Grizzly’s. They had live music every weekend.
JT met Harley shortly after arriving. Once the band started, they sat together and enjoyed the music. He went willingly when Harley asked him to dance. It was the first good time he had in a long time.
A friendship was struck, and soon they were talking every day. Before Harley came along JT thought Candy was the love of his life. He was having feelings he didn’t expect or want. JT could not stop thinking about her.
One hot summer night JT grabbed a bottle of whiskey from his liquor cabinet and walked down to the beach.
Halfway through the bottle JT heard a voice behind him.
“JT, I love you.”
He Stood. Quickly walking toward and embracing her.
“I love you too,” he whispered in her ear.
