Baggage Claim

The plane took off, and she let out a breath in relief. It was the first time in over a year Betty felt relaxed. She still wasn’t totally relaxed. Not with how she had to walk on eggshells around Tim.

When they started dating three years ago, Betty thought she had hit the jackpot.  Tim sent her flowers almost weekly, and listened to her. He was her best friend.

She moved in with Tim shortly after they got engaged, and everything changed. He had become more demanding, and less attentive.  He began to hit her if she didn’t do what he wanted.

Betty stared out the window at the clouds wondering if she did the right thing by running away. Despite everything, she still loved him. Although she was questioning why she still loved him.

Two nights ago, Betty thought the beating wouldn’t stop, it was the worst it had been. She decided it was safe to leave the house when she heard Tim snoring, and mumbling. Betty gave up, a while ago, trying to figure out what he was mumbling.

Her sister bought her the plane ticket. Now she was heading west where her brother had a room over the garage she could stay in until she got on her feet. Being a copy writing, Betty shouldn’t have a problem finding work.

Betty jumped when the plane touched down. Walking down the ramp, Betty grinned as she spotted her brother.

“They found Tim’s body this morning,” he kissed Betty on the cheek.  “The needle was still in his arm.”

She gave her brother an evil smile as they headed toward baggage claim.
