REGRET

Bobby gave Harry his space at the funeral home. Even though they were best friends, Bobby couldn’t imagine what Harry was going through. Back then Bobby was the only one who knew just how in love Harry was with Tina. Tina felt the same way but had bigger dreams than being a cop’s wife. She always confided in Bobby about her plans to leave for the bright lights of New York.

He felt guilty for not telling Harry, but Tina swore him too secrecy. He wondered if he should tell him now. What, if anything would it do to their friendship? Or their partnership? What good would it do other than get it off his conscious.

Bobby remembers that night with mixed emotions. Happy that he finally got to express his love for Tina. But filled with regret for feeling like he betrayed his best friend. A month later, he regretted what Tina chose.

Bobby didn’t know if he was more devastated after finding out or more pissed at Tina for not telling him. She could have talked to him about it. Bobby would’ve felt better about what she did. It took a while, but for Harry’s sake he eventually forgave her.

They didn’t speak on the drive back to the station. Bobby knew Harry was taking it rough, no matter how hard he tried not to show it. Words might only complicate the issue. Bobby was always there for Harry, and nothing was going to change that. He’d listen when and if Harry wanted to talk
