RUN

Peter walked into the Riverwalk Restaurant not knowing what to expect. Last night Mayor John Rogers phoned to invite him to an unscheduled lunch meeting, saying it was vary important that he come.

The Mayor was sitting at one of the square tables in the middle of the dinning room. Peter was surprised and confused to see his volleyball partner, Clark James, sitting across from the mayor.

All winter Peter has been pondering weather to play another season. Clark must have recruited John’s help to convince him.

John stood and shook Peter’s hand when he reached the table.

“I see Clark enlisted your help to talk me into playing. Save your breath.” He turned his head to look at Clark, “I decided to play.” Pointing at Clark, “You were right. I’d miss it too much,” Peter sat down.

“I’m glad that that’s settled,” the mayor said. “But it’s not why I asked you here,” sipping his water. “I called you here to say I’m not going to run again.” Holding Peter’s gaze, “You sould run. I think the timing is right.”

Peter was shocked and a little dumbfounded, “And Clark to run for my seat.”

Peter thought they would have to pry John’s body from that chair. He loved being mayor.

“I already agreed,” Clark confirmed, “if you run.”

“You always said you’d like to be mayor some day,” John said, buttering bread.

“Some day is now,” Clark grabbed a slice of bread. “It could be for both of us.”

Peter agreed. All during lunch they talked about the upcoming campaign.
