The Swing

He had forgotten how far into the woods was their spot. Joe brought Patti here whenever he wanted to be alone with her. Sometimes he come by himself just to get away for some alone time.

The swing that Patti and he hung between the trees was still there. Leaves and grass had grown over leaving spotty hole where the seat was still visible. He could still hear her laughing as he told her stupid jokes.

He was heartbroken after she didn’t show that day twenty-two years ago. Joe couldn’t blame her, though. He wasn’t really honest about his feelings. She was his first, and only love.

Joe just stood there unable to speak when she told him how much she loved and wanted to spend her life with him. Even though he suspected she did, and he wanted the same, it scared the shit out of him. When he got the nerve to say it back, she was already gone. He never got over it, or her.

He began to remove overgrowth when Joe got a strong feeling he was being watched. At first, he thought she might have been a mirage. Patty spoke, it was music to his ears.

He rushed up to her and wrapped his arms around her. Joe vowed to never let he go again.
